States Mock Tournament: 1-2 with Faerie Wizards
michaelj | November 7, 2008 | 2:53 amHi everyone,
I actually played Faerie Wizards in the mock tournament and just thought I’d share my experience.
I based my deck on Jorge Pinazo’s qualifying deck from the PT Berlin LCQ. However I was not sold on Bannerets and removed them in favor of 2 Jace Beleren and 2 Sower of Temptation. Faeries was a poor choice for this tiny metagame, which was heavily Red.
To open up I played against BDM with Blightning Beatdown. He handily beat me 2-1. I got the second game going first with — if I recall — multiple Spellstutter Sprites and an Agony Warp 2 for 1, but BDM will tell you he didn’t sideboard. In the third, when I was barely holding on by chaining Cryptic Commands, BDM broke me with a Gutteral Response.
I played Matt Ferrando second with a tokens deck. Matt got me in the first when I did not draw any Cryptic Commands. I was actually in good shape early with a Vendilion Clique stealing his Profane Command… and he just ripped another to get right back in the game. I was then desperate turn after turn but if I had had a Cryptic Caommand I could have raced and gone all the way. As it was, I won the next two.
Lastly I played Tom Nugent with a Red Deck. He got me 2-1 I think.
In conclusion the Faerie Wizards deck is not a good play for the tournament I played in. The meta was so red it was just painfully hostile to the Fae. My perception is doubtlessly skewed having played against three variations of the same core color… but I suppose that’s just how life rolls.
For reference:
4 Bitterblossom
4 Cryptic Command
2 Jace Beleren
4 Mistbind Clique
4 Ponder
4 Sage’s Dousing
4 Scion of Oona
2 Sower of Temptation
4 Spellstutter Sprite
4 Vendilion Clique
4 Faerie Conclave
3 Island
4 Mutavault
4 Secluded Glen
4 Sunken Ruins
1 Swamp
4 Underground River
Sideboard
1 Loxodon Warhammer
4 Puppeteer Clique
4 Thoughtseize
2 Sower of Temptation
4 Agony Warp
Good luck tomorrow. I suggest Jund Mana Ramp.

MIKE

Thanks for the input, too bad about the small sample size. I am intrigued by Jund Ramp, but won’t be going that route because I’m way too comfortable with my deck of choice. That could cause me to make a bad choice, but I’m confident in testing and know how to play the deck very well. I’m going to be running GB Elves, although not the newer version with Trolls and Blossoms. In testing they were very underwhelming and I really preferred the power of the older version with a ton of 4-ofs of the best cards in GB. We’ve tweaked the sideboard, obviously, but I’ve piloted nearly the same 60 to Top 4s in last year’s KY States and the 08 KY Open and I hope to top it this year.
