Around the Web: Plainswalk on This!
bdm | December 8, 2008 | 10:59 amThanks to everyone who followed along on Saturday. Hope you enjoyed the admittedly truncated coverage. The Top 16 decklists from the event went up on Star City Games this morning and can be found here. The winning list and Osyp’s list are both listed as Vengeant Weenie but Osyp’s list is actually the Kowal Boat Brew which is a Reveilark based deck while the winning list is a more traditonal White Weenie variant. Keep in mind that Jacob Van Lunen went 7-2 with a similar “Boros” list although his 20th place finish would be less likely to have as profound an impact on the metagame as the winning list will surely have on Worlds’ Standard portion.

4 lark???
i need know Corey Mann sibedoard plans.
i dont like mutavault and rustic in his deck?
8 red mana only?this deck can beat 5cc?
Pretty sure Corey was the Kith who beat me in Round eight to make Top 8. Good for him!
An earlier entry covering a match of Osyp’s says he plays knight of the white orchid. Guess it meant meadowgrain, unless the meadowgrains listed on scg are the mistake.
Osyp was definitely playing Knight of the White Orchid. I don’t know if he was also playing Meadowgrains but he 100% had the land fetcher in his deck.
Corey briefly discusses his sideboarding strategy in his interview with The Magic Show’s Evan Erwin; I believe the episode will be available this coming Friday, December 12th. Interestingly enough, though, I think he mentions during that interview that the larks actually felt sort of clunky during the day, as he didn’t get paired up that much against 5cc. At least, that’s what I remember from last night’s conversation with him at Applebee’s about the tournament.
Interesting stories of the day include Osyp apparently demonstrating such a huge amount of unsportsmanlike conduct towards his Top 8 opponent that Evan Erwin had to pull him aside to get him to calm down, and Corey’s match against Mike Flores where Flores keeps something like a (post-sideboard) five mountain + Everlasting Torment opening hand, and proceeds to draw another Everlasting Torment.
And yes, this deck beats 5cc. It beats a *lot* of stuff. Trust me, as I play-test various decks against Corey actually piloting that deck most nights out of the week. It has an annoying tendency to get either incredibly gassy hands which take you into deep-red before you can set up your board-wipers (assuming you even draw them), or recover from wrath effects incredibly fast thanks to post-sweeper Cloudgoats or Spectral Processions firing off Windbrisk Heights.
Additionally, as we all know, Ajani Vengeant can effectively cut off 5cc’s entire early mana base (or most decks in the format, for that matter) by keeping opponents from firing off filter lands or using their vivids. It’s an incredibly consistent deck piloted by a very skilled player; a deadly combination.
Another interesting thing to note about Corey’s build; it’s entirely Lorwyn/Shadowmoor Block Constructed legal with the exception of Ajani Vengeant; so it’s more “Block Kithkin” than “Vengeant Weenie”; at least, in my opinion.
Vengeant + Weenies seems to fit pretty well <_<
Sure, it plays weenies and Ajani Vengeant, but “Vengeant Weenie”, as it’s known, is a completely different deck, which combines some of the traditional Kithkin creatures with various burn spells such as Incinerate, Flame Javelin, or Puncture Blast. For an example, check out Adam Schaff’s 1st Place States Deck over at StarCityGames.com.
(To correct my previous post, the Battlefield Forges are the only cards along with Vengeant that aren’t legal in Block Kithkin).
