Philly 5K: Feature Match: Mike Flores vs. Adam Levitt
bdm | December 6, 2008 | 6:34 pm“Two events in a row?” lamented Adam Levitt, a Neutral Ground player who regularly gets paired with Flores. And by regularly I mean they played a couple of weeks ago during States.
The matchup was Mike playing Blightning Beatdown while Adam Levitt was playing a Standard version of the Reflecting Pool Control deck he used to qualify for Berlin.
“I finally won a die roll today,” said Mike who did not win his die roll this round — something he was pretty concerned about. “He gets like 20% on a match for winning a die roll. That’s a lot.”
Game One
A pair of Ghitu Encampments from Mike just sat there while Adam adjusted his life total down to 19 and then back up again for Kitchen Finks.
“This is so bad.”
Mike made Hell’s Thunder on the next two turns while Adam developed his mana and attacked back with the Finks.
Mike activated his Encampment and Adam suggested that he might have a Cryptic Command but Mike just attacked and Adam adjusted his life total.
Adam played his sixth land and thought about his plays.
“What is it? Is it exciting?” chirped Mike. “Will you take damage from your Adarkar Wastes?”
It was Oona but Mike Incinerated him at the end of turn and untapped to attack with unearthed Thunder and when Adam blocked he finished it off with Tarfire. The score was 14 to 8 in Mike’s favor.
Mike activated both his Encampments and attacked into the Finks.
“”Lets see you will play a thresher, eat my guy, you’ll gain 2 and have a 7/7. Is that what I am going to do? It is.”
Adam had Bant Charm and Adam gained 2. Mike was able to finish him off with a flurry of Incinerates, unearths, and a Flame Javelin.
“Where were all my spells that game?” asked Levitt who ended the game with a mittful of Shriekmaw. Not that he thought having that card was a mistake.
“I am probably the only person in the room playing that card. I don’t know why people stopped playing it. It gets in there and kills Planeswalkers , which you have to be able to do right now.”
Game two
Adam mulliganed two times — not a good thing against the Blightning deck. He did have Forge-Tender and Kitchen Finks but Mike had Mogg Fanatic and Everlasting Torment.
The Torment flat out baffled Adam who lost his Finks to a Mogg Fanatic. After getting his head around the life gain portion of the card he still had to work on the wither part.
“I am sure makig this easy for you,” cried Adam as be threw his last two cards to Mike’s Blightning. Be perked up as he ripped and played an Oona.
“That was the one card I wanted to rip and I ripped it.”
Mike showed him a gripful of burn spells and Adam extended the hand and congratulated him on going to 6-1.
