Jund Mana Ramp Test List

michaelj | May 7, 2009 | 11:14 am

Hey guys!

I just wanted to do a follow up post to the testing session that Will Price and I did “live from Twitter” (sort of) on Tuesday night.

People have been asking for our Jund Mana Ramp deck list; will do more substantial posts later, but I just wanted to get the deck list out there so folks can start working!

Happy Regionals,

3 Makeshift Mannequin
3 Shriekmaw

4 Broodmate Dragon
4 Kitchen Finks

4 Civic Wayfinder
4 Cloudthresher
4 Gift of the Gargantuan
4 Rampant Growth

4 Banefire
3 Volcanic Fallout

4 Fire-Lit Thicket
8 Forest
2 Mountain
4 Savage Land
1 Swamp
4 Treetop Village

Yes, for those of you paying attention at home, this is very much like my States-era Jund Mana Ramp deck, but with a threat base Brian Kowal would appreciate more and a Mannequin sub-theme (thanks Spencer!).

LOVE
MIKE

Sideboard?

Alfrebaut | May 7, 2009 | 5:40 pm

Wow, there really ARE no Reborn cards in there. It still kind of looks like the Elf could slot in there, but I guess Cascade/Banefire is about as nombo as it gets. But like BDM, I’m really greedy and want to go Elf->Gift->Wayfinder/Treetop. That’s a 4-for-1. So… greedy…

ProdigalT | May 7, 2009 | 5:42 pm

This seems much weaker against Faeries than your old list, which had 8 Pyroclasms, if only 3 Cloudthreshers. Is that deck out-of-favor now, or do the maindeck Shriekmaws and Mannequins make up for it?

jms | May 7, 2009 | 5:56 pm

what’s interesting is i’ve been testing w/ mannequin but not for a jund-ramp. just to mannequin bloodbraid back into play. eot mannequin on bloodbraid into –whatever because it’s going to be gud– that’s hot. so hot it’s sexy.

Tim | May 7, 2009 | 6:01 pm

Hey, I know you guys have thought about Caldera Hellion in the main, and I hope it’s in your sideboard at least. Don’t forget that if you have Mannequin it’s a double wrath (declining to devour). And tutorable with Gift! It is however expensive and sorcery speed.

I think it’s the best sweeper available to you against white token decks, especially against persist versions since you can get the double wrath out of it.

If you could just let us know your exact thoughts on Caldera Hellion we’d appreciate it. =)

sheetylogik | May 7, 2009 | 6:01 pm

testing now, will post results later tonight.

I have B/W token, Boat Brew, G/W token, Faeries, 5 color all lined up to play.

sheetylogik | May 7, 2009 | 6:08 pm

I would assume the sideboard can be naughty nate things for control matchups like

3x Anathemancer
4x Terminate
4x Jund Charm
2x Mindshatter
2x Maelstrom Pulse

I dunno, giving ideas!

KBR | May 7, 2009 | 6:28 pm

I could be wrong, but doesn’t this have a really hard time with 5c? The only real threat you have is Banefire.

Bob Baker | May 7, 2009 | 6:38 pm

This deck has Banefire, Thresher, and Mannequin all at instant speed to play against 5c. Seems like more than enough.

amistod | May 7, 2009 | 7:13 pm

My modo old std testing sb is:
2 hellion
2 necrogenesis
2 mind shatter
1 fallout
1 shriekmaw
4 terror
3 gutteral response

0-4 with it vs g/w tokens, b/w tokens, elementals, and elves. taking everything to game 3 and really only losing if i dont find broodmate. i am mainly testing in ques, so as to get legitimate competition.

amistod | May 7, 2009 | 7:29 pm

i hate tokens.
sculler, anthem, ajani, cloudgoat, anthem, i die on turn 6.

meanwhile, he steals my turn 3 play, so i only cast 2 spells before i die?

WillPoP | May 7, 2009 | 8:16 pm

Thanks for all the comments guys!

@JMS I think Makeshift Mannequin + Bloodbraid Elf is a nombo; Cascade only triggers when you play the cards, not when it comes into play. I made this mistake as well when I first started playing the deck (When we had the elf still in).

Sideboard (that I have been testing, not Flores approved)
4 Anathemancer
1 Shriekmaw
1 Volcanic Fallout
3 Terminate
2 Mind Shatter
3 Guttural Response

SB seems overloaded for the control match atm, and 5c has been pretty easy in the games I have played.

michaelj | May 7, 2009 | 10:08 pm

This is what I am sideboarding right now:

4 Anathemancer (best Magic)
1 Shriekmaw
1 Volcanic Fallout
4 Terminate
2 Mind Shatter
2 Primal Command (might be 4 Primal Command, 0 Mind Shatter)
1 Karrthus

I am not sure we can reliably cast Terminate under pressure though. Haven’t tested sideboarded at all yet.

sheetylogik | May 8, 2009 | 12:05 am

I just got done smashing B/w and G/W tokens., ran out of time, didnt get to test other matchups, tomorrow, more!

nice work on deck guys, VERY fun to play. Very consistant draws too.

I only seemed to lose to B/W when they got likethe double Tidehollow + Glorious Anthem protection. And never drew banefires to get my stripped cards back.

Lavalanche could be hot too. Because Zealous Persecution = ng

I too did not test any board yet.

Gifts is like the best card in the deck. gg

Peter Knudson | May 8, 2009 | 12:06 am

I really don’t like shriekmaw to fill the two drop spot on the curve (he’s fine if there are enough other spells to play on turn two). On the play, or if the opponent doesn’t play a two drop, rampant growth is the only spell until turn three. If your willing to play land go, land go, on the first two turns you should just play five color control.

socratic | May 8, 2009 | 3:11 am

I’m still leery of Gift, but it’s only based on theory. Have you been keeping track of how often you only get one card with it? My rough numbers say that should happen around 20% of the time.

WillPoP | May 8, 2009 | 11:16 am

@sheetylogik you are reminding me that we need to test against the new builds that have Zealous Persecution. Might mean we can’t afford to be so greedy with Fallout/Thresher, have to wrath the board whenever they are tapped out. I’m glad your testing went so well yesterday.

VictorP | May 8, 2009 | 1:56 pm

What do you think of Wild Ricochette in the board? Seems pretty good against opposing Banefires, red decks in general, kind of cancels out Cruel Ultimatum and wrecks people planning on finishing the game with Profane Command.

Tim | May 8, 2009 | 4:29 pm

I think if you’re playing Mindshatter you at least need 2 swamps in main.

Tim | May 8, 2009 | 4:33 pm

Sorry to double post.

I’m not sure if it needs Terminate in the sideboard, I’d rather have something that can take out Chameleon Colossus or deal with Reveillark. Loxodon Warhammer is nice for racing aggro, other builds are playing it might be worth something.

Brendan H. | May 8, 2009 | 5:00 pm

I know it’s pretty janky, but Lignify for hard to deal with big creatures with gross abilities?

Haman | May 8, 2009 | 6:08 pm

the terminate don really work well, unless you have a tap land and rampant growth, if terminate is meant for dealing with hard to deal creature, which u don need to cast in the early turns, then it ’s ok … else something like eyeblight’s ending, lash out ,resounding thunder or wretched banquet should be consider if those slots are meant for pesky weenies.

caldera hellion , 4th ms mannuquin, incendiary command are worth considering. Combonation of sculler, glorious anthem and ajani cost alot of problem. need to deal 3 damage to all creatures at least.

Amarsir | May 9, 2009 | 12:12 am

I’m honestly shocked there aren’t any Maelstrom Pulse in that decklist. But I’m sure you tried it, so it’s not like you didn’t think of them. More importantly, my instinct is to think that problem decks will be both ends of the spectrum: Boddy Sligh and Twinsanity. And Maelstrom Pulse doesn’t help much against either. (Maybe for jace in the latter.)

Dochetwas | May 9, 2009 | 2:11 am

Hmm. Well, it’s not a Mana Ramp style deck, but this is my first draft of a Jund-style deck:

4 Boggart Ram-Gang
4 Bramblewood Paragon
4 Viashino Slaughtermaster
4 Rip-Clan Crasher
4 Anathemancer
4 Tattermunge Maniac
4 Broodmate Dragon
3 Madrush Cyclops
3 Obsidian Battle-Axe
2 Lavalanche

4 Treetop Village
4 Savage Lands
2 Reflecting Pool
4 Karplusan Forest
2 Twilight Mire
2 Graven Cairns
4 Mountain
1 Forest
1 Exotic Orchard

I don’t know if I want to pursue this line of thought, or go another route, but this is definitely a fun deck to play. Broodmate Dragon is just greedy enough to justify itself, & is ridiculously fun with a Cyclops out.

Tim | May 9, 2009 | 4:46 am

I’m actually really sold on Karrthus being in the board due to Colossus.

Will Price | May 9, 2009 | 10:39 am

Karrthus stealing a Chameleon Colossus sounds pretty awesome. I could see running 2 in the board now.

sheetylogik | May 9, 2009 | 2:57 pm

I totally forgot about Colossus being a changling, LOL that is so funny. I will deff run Karrthus in board,

Oh and I think it definitely calls for 4 Primal Command in the board. the card is SO good for us.

doing for testing today , as I did not make it to the PTQ i was planning to go to.

Romero | May 9, 2009 | 3:41 pm

How are the matchups? I expect lots of BG elves, BW Tokens, RW, 5cc…

I was wondering how the deck faces against those decks etc!

I really like it so far… Gifts is a blowout card!

Thanks again for amazing technology

markabq | May 9, 2009 | 11:58 pm

This was abysmal in my testing against B/W tokens. It was 0-6 (all unsideboarded); none of the games were even close. Looking at the list, it seems like it should be a favorable match up. Bad luck? Bad play?

Victor P | May 11, 2009 | 10:43 am

I took a BRg token deck to the 5K in Indy and went 6-4. Looking back the deck was probably more cute than good but one thing that I was always thankful for was Sprouting Thrinax. It caused so many problem for other aggro players. Could you see it fitting in the sideboard somewhere?

And just for kicks, here is the deck.
// Lands
2 Treetop Village
2 Reflecting Pool
2 Fire-Lit Thicket
2 Graven Cairns
1 Twilight Mire
2 Swamp
4 Savage Lands
1 Mountain
1 Sulfurous Springs
4 Auntie’s Hovel
1 Llanowar Wastes
2 Karplusan Forest
1 Forest

Creatures
4 Nantuko Husk
4 Sarkhan Vol
4 Siege-Gang Commander
4 Sprouting Thrinax
4 Goblin Outlander
1 Furystoke Giant

Spells
4 Bitterblossom
3 Grave Pact
1 Torrent of Souls
4 Volcanic Fallout
2 Profane Command

bdm | May 12, 2009 | 11:24 am

Karthus making a Dramatic Entrance with one or more Chameleon in play would make for a happy turn four or five.

James | May 17, 2009 | 11:25 am

My personal Jund mana ramp is a little more literal mana ramp. with this you can literally pull out a Hellkite by turn 4 which is pretty hard to deal with if they arnt playing Path to Exile. heres my sugestion:
Land:
4 Forest
4 mountain
2 swamps
4 Savage lands
2 Twilight Mires
2 Fire-lit Thickets
1 Graven Cairns

Spells:
4 Overgrowth
4 Fertile Grounds
4 Rampant Growths
3 Primal Command
2 Profane Command

Creatures:
2 Hellkite Overlord
4 Chameleon Colossus
4 Broodmate Dragon
4 Kitchen Finks
4 Rip-Clan Crasher
4 Sprouting Thrinax

Planeswalker:
2 Garruk Wildspeaker

Now most of these creatures can be replaced by your choice of giant jund creatures but this is my preference and so far im undefeated with this deck =)
P.s. you might want to keep a side board of sweepers on your ( Volcanic Fallouts and Fire Spouts) because of all these black white token and kithkin decks =)
