Duels of the Planeswalkers Launch!

Will Price | June 18, 2009 | 1:56 pm

Interested in getting your hands on that alternate art foil Garruk? You’re going to have to download Duels of the Planeswalkers, which finally released yesterday for the Xbox (available through the Xbox Live Arcade). Scheduled to release yesterday morning, the game was not available for download until late last night (around 11:30pm EDT by my estimation) due to some technical snags on Microsoft’s part. Early buyers will receive a code which can be redeemed through the Wizard’s site for a limited edition Garruk.

For anyone who has the game already (or is thinking of getting it soon) there are two awesome events on the horizon: Game with Fame and Game with Developers

The Game with Fame event, scheduled for June 20th, will pit players to against these notable/notorious MTG figures:

Richard Garfield, creator of Magic: The Gathering
Mike Turian, a Magic: The Gathering Pro Tour Hall of Famer
Jon Finkel, a Magic: The Gathering Pro Tour Hall of Famer
Gerry Thompson, Pro Tour player
Jamie Parke, Pro Tour Player
Brian Kibler, Pro Tour Player

Game with Fame will be followed up with the Game with Developers event, scheduled for June 27th. Players will be able to compete against 27 of the games designers, developers, and producers from Wizards of the Coast, Stainless Games, Microsoft and VMC.

I have been anxiously awaiting the Duels release since WotC announced the date a couple of weeks ago. Expect a review of the game early next week.

PS: For anyone who isn’t on Twitter, check out this Russian site with some awesome looking M10 artwork. Notice anything interesting?

Unfortunately this doesn’t actually work yet. I’m not sure if it’s a global problem, but I and some friends downloaded the game last night. None of us can get the Garruk code generation piece to work. It errors out with a “Check your Internet connection” message.

I downloaded this last night and got an error when I tried to generate a redemption code for my foil Garruk.

Anyone else have this problem?

I also got the error I would really like to have that code….

Holy crap is that Lighting Bolt? Is the gold standard of burn spells returning?

Bjbrains | June 19, 2009 | 12:29 am

Looks very much like that *is* lightning bolt. Looks like red’s power level is really being pushed in M10. The return of RDW/RG aggro?

quetzilla | June 19, 2009 | 6:04 am

It is, and if you read Friday’s dev column on the mothership its pretty heavily hinted at. Also hinted is a white only crusade (Honor fo the Pure from the russian site) and maybe dragon whelp or an M10 version of it?

I think they’re right about bolt though. In a world of Terminate, Path to Exile, Flame Javelin and Blightning (the removal and burn aspects of bolt) the old LB doesn’t look so overpowered.

Also, the yearly Core Sets will rotate out of Standard faster than we’re used to, so they can afford to experiment a little bit more with card power levels.

I thought the “…anything interesting?” was the cleave that sphinx is showing off. I was left drooling once I realized it was the Bolt. That is hot!
