Price of Progress: M10 Pre-Release

Will Price | July 14, 2009 | 1:07 pm

My brother, Zeilend and myself arrived at Fight House in NYC for the M10 Pre-re. The venue is small and not really equipped for hosting events. Because of the limited space, the organizers could not do continuous flights, so we had to wait a bit for the next scheduled event to start. Of course, all this information was available, should we have had the foresight to look at the organizers website or read the emails stating the event schedule for the day.

Here is the pool I received for Gold flight, which started around 1pm:

Land:
Drowned Catacomb ($!)

Artifacts:
Angel’s Feather
Demon’s Horn
Dragon’s Claw
Spellbook (Foil)
Gorgon Flail

Earthquake
Trumpet Blast
Firebreathing x2
Yawning Fissure x2
Kindled Fury

Kelinore Bat x2

Ice Cage
Divination
Disorient x2
Tome Scour
Ponder x2
Horned Turtle
Levitation
Snapping Drake
Fabricate
Serpent of the Endless Sea
Cancel
Convincing Mirage
Unsummon

This list may be 1-2 cards off since my brother dumped his cards into my bad on the way back, and a few got mixed in.

I was very happy to open this pool. I went into the event thinking that White was the strongest color in the set, and I opened a very White-heavy pool. I couldn’t imagine building without white as my other colors were pretty shallow. I did have a bomb in Blue, the Sphinx, but a lack of fliers ruled out blue as my second color.

Green was eliminated next as it was also a bit shallow. I didn’t have many exciting creatures and no way to get forests into play to support the Overrun.

I was left with Black and Red, and spent a reasonable amount of time debating between the two. Black was a bit more aggressive with the evasive 3-drops and and the 2/1 lifelink. I also had a Tendrils and a Sign in Blood, which both seemed good.

Red had more removal. Lightning Bolt, double Seismic Strike, Earthquake, Prodigal Pyromancer, and Goblin Artillery. The Ball Lightning was also tempting but was too much of a trap; I want my second color to be a splash and paying RRR for 6 damage was too greedy even for a pre-release.

I ended up with this, a somewhat aggressive WR deck:

Prodigal Pyromancer
Goblin Artillery
Sparkmage Apprentice
Canyon Minotaur
Siege Mastodon
Serra Angel
Blinding Mage x2
Veteran Armorsmith
Veteran Swordsmith
Soul Warden x2
White Knight
Elite Vanguard
Griffin Sentinel
Razorfoot Griffin

Honor of the Pure
Armored Ascension
Earthquake
Seismic Strike x2
Lightning Bolt

Gorgon Flail

10 Plains
7 Mountains

I ended up going 3-1 in my flight, losing only to my brother Lyle in Round 1. He hadn’t played Magic since States and hadn’t played limited for probably a year or so. He showed me his deck, calling it “bad” and “embarrassing.” He was playing WR splashing green for Might of Oaks (Greedy!). His deck was similar to mine, but he had Siege Gang Commander, 2x Pacifism, Ajani Goldmane, Pyroclasm and Planar Cleansing. He ended up going 3-0-1 and shipping me the packs (mise!).

Three of my four opponent were playing white-based decks, which says something for how strong the color is relative to the others. I had a good time playing my deck and think I built it reasonably well (let me know in the comments, of course!). I was tempted to try out Safe Passage and Indestructibility, but I couldn’t figure out what to cut. My removal was strong and I wanted to play all my White creatures to maximize the Honor of the Pure. The strongest card in my deck was Armored Ascension, not terribly surprising considering how good it was in Shadowmoor drafts.

I didn’t encounter a single point in any of my games where the rules changes made a difference. In four rounds of play I never saw a double-block scenario, and was never put in a situation where I wished I could stack damage before using an effect. I still haven’t had a chance to test constructed with the new rules, but after playing the pre-release I feel much better about the changes than I did initially.

Overall I had a great time at the event. I netted 15 packs of M10 between myself and my brother, as well as a couple desirable rares. What was your experience at the M10 pre-release? Did you sealed, draft, or 2hg? What impressed/depressed you about the set? Put your thoughts in the comments.

seems like a URb build to me (but I’m notoriously greedy on running too many colors, so YMMV)

Whispersilk Cloak
Sparkmage Apprentice
Berserkers of Blood Ridge
Lightning Elemental x2
Canyon Minotaur
Magma Phoenix
Bogardan Hellkite
Gravedigger
Assassinate
Doom Blade
Essence Scatter x2
Snapping Drake x2
Negate
Merfolk Looter
Wind Drake
Sage Owl
Wall of Frost
Mind Control
Clone
Time Warp

7 Island
7 Mountain
3 Swamp

Would consider moving the Negate to the board to play the 8th Island (18 land).

Whispersilk Cloak

Runeclaw Bear
Centaur Corsair
Entangling Vines
Craw Wurm
Enormous Baloth
Llanowar Elves
Borderland Ranger x2
Oakenform x2

Doom Blade

Essence Scatter x2
Snapping Drake x2
Negate
Merfolk Looter
Wind Drake
Wall of Frost
Mind Control
Clone
Time Warp

Looks good to me, and similar to my deck. Time Warp can be nasty for just squeezing in some extra damage, and considering you have 3 good fliers and 2 big ground pounders along with the Cloak, Time Warp will almost always be extra damage. You’ve got the amazing Merfolk Looter, 2 Borderland Rangers to help with the1 swamp for Doom Blade, Oakenform to make your fliers even MORE lethal, and a couple of removal spells. Clone is totally nasty, and Mind Control won me half of my games on the day. I think U/G aggro-control is a good archetype in Sealed as long as you open a few really nice blue cards. I’d like to see a Divination to give your Looter some food, but he’s totally unreal on his own.

Tekanan | July 14, 2009 | 8:39 pm

White seems strong too besides black (note how the multiple looming shades, tendrils and consume spirit would be able to push you into heavy black). Red lacks removals, but is begging to be played because of magma phoenix and bogardan hellkite. I would initlally go for RG, but realised that I would not have enough cards to make a solid deck. Going GWr is very tempting, but I think I would go for GBr instead.

3 Mountain
7 Forest
7 Swamp

Diabolic Tutor

Vampire Aristocrat

Magma Phoenix
Bogardan Hellkite

Whispersilk cloak

Pre re was pretty good, as you know my deck was almost the same as your brothers (odd). I liked how your deck turned out but Zeilend should have definitely been playing black in some way/shape/form. Although the color might have seemed shallow, overall it had some of the best commons in the color.

BTW I made my way back up to Manahat, without getting too lost, later direction from Michael J :p. so the night worked out well too.

Kenyon Colloran | July 14, 2009 | 11:25 pm

I’d go Bu. I’d run all the black cards other than duress and zombie goliath. Then I’d add in whispersilk cloak. From blue I’d play clone, mind control, time warp, merfolk looter, and the two snapping drakes. As for lands I’d running 11 swamps and 6 islands. Yes Hellkite and Magma phoenix are bombs, but especially with hellkite costing 8 you’re just going to be putting yourself in a situation where you have to rely on too many poor cards to play red.

Here’s how I would build that pool… UG splashing for the 2 ridiculous Red flyers.

Whispersilk Cloak

Runeclaw Bear
Centaur Corsair
Entangling Vines
Craw Wurm
Mist Leopard
Borderland Ranger x2
Oakenform x2

Magma Phoenix
Bogarden Hellkite

Essence Scatter x2
Snapping Drake x2
Merfolk Looter
Wind Drake
Sage Owl
Wall of Frost
Mind Control
Clone
Time Warp

8 Island
7 Forest
2 Mountain

If only there were a Sleep in this pool…that card won me so many games at the prerelease! UG is a really good combination in M10, assuming you have at least decent cards. I’m tempted to put the Enormous Baloth in (it’s enormous!), but I don’t know what to cut for it. Probably gets sided in a lot against decks without black, but that’s just my opinion.

two_eyes | July 16, 2009 | 4:40 am

The strength of this pool is the deep Green, specifically the Borderland Rangers (my kingdom for a single one, and here two fall into your friend’s lap) and the Entangling Vines (which is absurdly good). The weakness is that your most impressive bombs are in Red, which is my least favorite color.

My solution was to take the deep Green, add the good White, and splash two Black removal spells, because Borderland Ranger is a house.

Excommunicate
Undead Slayer
Razorfoot Griffin
Silvercoat Lion
White Knight
Divine Verdict
Planar Cleansing
Stormfront Pegasus

Prized Unicorn
Runeclaw Bear
Centaur Courser
Entangling Vines
Craw Wurm
Enormous Baloth
Llanowar Elves
Mist Leopard
Mist Leopard
Borderland Ranger
Borderland Ranger
Oakenform

Doom Blade
Assassinate

Whispersilk Cloak

Swamp
8x Forest
8x Plains

If the thought of leaving Bogardan Hellkite and Magma Phoenix in the sideboard leaves you physically ill, replace the Plains with Mountains and the eight white cards with:

Magma Phoenix
Bogardan Hellkite
Canyon Minotaur
Lightning Elemental
Lightning Elemental
Sparkmage Apprentice
Stone Giant
Berserkers of Blood Ridge

The problem is that this Red pool has so very, very little to offer. Look at the eight red cards I put in - they’re all creatures. Red is not exactly known for its creatures. I would be super happy to play G/R with this pool with the phoenix, the dragon, and some of those awful creatures being burn spells instead. My white has one great removal spell, one decent removal spell, and one bomb that is just as devastating as Magma Phoenix or Bogardan Hellkite, and the best part is that no one will see it coming.

But if you didn’t play Green with this pool, you’re wrong.

RPrajzner | July 17, 2009 | 2:34 pm

I love me some G/X/x/x in M10 (going G/U/R/W in my pre)
Here I go G/U/r with:

Whispersilk Cloak

Runeclaw Bear
Centaur Corsair
Entangling Vines
Craw Wurm
Enormous Baloth
Llanowar Elves
Prized Unicorn
Mist Leopard x2
Borderland Ranger x2
Oakenform x2

Snapping Drake x2
Merfolk Looter
Wall of Frost
Mind Control
Clone
Time Warp

Magma Phoenix
Bogardan Hellkite

5Mountain
7Island
8Forest

I also always build the deck then add one more of each basic. It’s worked out well so far. You need 7 for Baloth and 8 for Hellkite. You have a looter and no X spells so late lands you just wanna loot. Mist Leopard is my only doubt here. We have no Giant Growths so he should go good.
