Drafting with Greedy (That’s me)
bdm | December 23, 2009 | 2:12 amThanks to the instructions from Paul Jordan I was able to set up to do some “Drafting with…” entries. I am hosting them on this Google website because…well because. Actually I started doing them mostly for my local draft group and now they are all set up here so I figured I could just link over to them. This was my first attempt. I do not have the decklist but I ended up splashing black off of the Harrows and two refuges for a Mosquito and occasionally sideboarded Soul Stair Expedition. I won this draft and felt sheepish afterwards and attempted to draft a little more seriously in subsequent efforts.
This was a more straightforward draft than my adventures in Crabbing. I took Kor Skyfisher and got paid off for being, I have to assume, the only white drafter. I am not sure how to value Narrow Escape and Arrow Volley Trap at all. I really want the Escape and want nothing to do with the Trap in game one but I did side it in for game three against a red deck in round one.

Pick1 pack 5 Goblin War Paint over Shatterskull Giant or Giant Scorpion, you ended up not playing it, evidence of the fact that it’s not as good as the above cards.
Pack 3 Pick 1, Teetering Peeks over Magma Rift
I would say Burst Lightning over Hellkite Charger for sure…you’re clearly heavy white and you’re not really planning on getting to seven mana. It’s not that great in your deck, it’s not that great against you, and it forces you to play extra red sources which slows down Lightcaster and potentially some of the two drops.
I would’ve taken out Hellkite Charger and Khalni Gem (yeah it’s good with landfall but it doesn’t do enough) and played Magma Rift (underrated in decks like this) and Shieldmate’s Blessing (ditto), or of course Burst Lightning if you took it. Goblin War Paint is a candidate too but I think it’s not quite good enough since you have a Nimbus Wings.
Nice drafts BDM,
I would have differed on two picks in the third draft. As Dakota already pointed out, I think I would have taken the Giant Scorpion instead of the Goblin Warpaint Pack1 Pick5. You have passed no good black at this point other than a Crypt Ripper, so taking the scorpion here opens you up to splashing black as you could reasonably expect to get some black coming your way pack 2 (although that is not how it worked out, which just shows how willing people are to draft black in this format).
Pack 3 Pick 9 I think I would have taken the Kabira Crossroads instead of the Outfitter. You don’t have any equipment and you have lots of two drops at that point. Most of the time you are looking to race with this type of deck (its the type of deck I draft the most in ZZZ). Crossroad + multiple Skyfishers can buy you an extra turn or two to find a Brave the Elements, or to just keep you ahead in the race if you are behind.
These are all really nice drafts, the crab one was my favorite as that deck can win especially when you get three harrows.
For the white decks. it was probably nice to hit that many of the good commons as these decks are often really hard to draft.
Anyway in terms of picks. I think you take charger over burst. Technically burst is the more streamlined pick and if this was pack 3 id say burst it up. However, this is pack two pick one. You think you have a good idea of where your going but who knows what can happen in the next two packs. In this scenario id say go with the trump. The guy who could just win the game. By including that one card you are giving your deck a plan B and in zendikar people hit 6 all the time. Besides I thought this was called drafting w. greedy.
Also, I hate adventuring gear while hookmaster is one of your most powerful commons.
Nice Job BDM
Merry x mas
I was surprised to see Bold Defense and Kor Duelist over Zektar Shrine Expedition in draft 2 pack 3. It seems the shrines would fit well into a deck like that, especially with the skyfishers. Great decks overall though, and I hope we can see some more Drafting with Greedy in the future!
