Podcast: Random Encounters in Grand Central Part 4

bdm | 05:42PM on Wed Oct 27 2010

Random Encounters Part 4

So it seems like Mike wants to make a habit of meeting in Grand Central Station for podcasts. Apparently it is easier than him coming downtown to the new Top8Magic.com digs — which he has still not even come to visit yet. Somehow one of the busiest commuter stations in the world is the least acoustically challenging space we can agree to meet at. This time it did lead to a couple of random encounters including local Level 3 judge Eric Smith and a quick drive-by with Mario Batali (we did not speak to Mario, just made note of him passing by) as well as some random people asking for directions and attempting to menace us into giving them money for their CD.

Podcast: Random Encounters in Grand Central Part 3

Random Encounters Part 3

Mike and I were talking on this set of ‘casts — or was it the previous set — about Necrotic Ooze in Standard. It seems pretty exciting to me with Molten-Tail Masticores, Gigantomancers, and other cool-but-too-expensive-to-ever-summon creatures like Kalitas. Anyway, here is a rough list — sans any sideboard — that I have been toying around with on MTGO this week.I have had a couple of turn four kills when my three members of my one-drop squad got by unblocked with an Ooze in play and Gigantomancer in the yard. This is a very rough list but it has been a lot of fun so far and seems like something to build on.

Ooze Line Is It Anyway?
Brian David-Marshall

2 Drowned Catacomb
2 Grim Discovery
4 Birds of Paradise
1 Bloodshot Trainee
1 Swamp
4 Misty Rainforest
4 Llanowar Elves
7 Forest
4 Gigantomancer
4 Molten-Tail Masticore
4 Vengevine
4 Necrotic Ooze
1 Kalitas, Bloodchief of Ghet
4 Verdant Catacombs
2 Island
4 Hedron Crab
4 Fauna Shaman
4 Darkslick Shores

Over the course of this last couple of ‘casting sessions Mike has begun to brew up a TurboLand variant with Genesis Wave. He recently wrote about this list over on TCGPlayer.com.

Scars of Mirrodin Set Review: Black, Red, and Green by Seth Burn

bdm | 12:06PM on Wed Sep 29 2010

Seth Burn is a long-time Magic columnist — you may remember him as the resident Used Deck Salesman when TCGPlayer.com was known as Brainburst — a fixture of the NY Magic community, and known for his annual NFL previews on various Magic sites throughout the years. He felt the siren’s call of the set review for the soon to be released Scars of Mirrodon and we are happy to present it here at Top8Magic.

Black:

Carnifex Demon

Being able to kill a bunch of weenies and tokens with your 6/6 flyer is a nice trick, but Grave Titan is already so good in the 6 drop slot that it would require a pretty specialized metagame to make Demon a better choice.

Corrupted Harvester

Twisted Abomination is laughing at you. Yeah, you have 1 more power, whatever.

Exsanguinate

The problem with cards that excel in multiplayer is that they suck in multiplayer. When you play cards like Exsanguinate you find yourself against all flags. Enjoy your life gain, now you die. Read the rest of this entry »

Scars of Mirrodin Set Review: White, Blue, and White-Blue by Seth Burn

bdm | 11:44AM on Wed Sep 29 2010

Seth Burn is a long-time Magic columnist — you may remember him as the resident Used Deck Salesman when TCGPlayer.com was known as Brainburst — a fixture of the NY Magic community, and known for his annual NFL previews on various Magic sites throughout the years. White:

Arrest

Oblivion Ring is unimpressed.

Auriok Edgewright

Usually he’ll be a bear. Sometimes he’ll be a super bear. Getting metalcraft isn’t as easy as I would have hoped, and the payoff simply isn’t that large.

Auriok Sunchaser

Pretty worthless without metalcraft, a 3/3 flyer for 2 with it. If metalcraft were almost certain I’d like him, but it isn’t.

* Addendum: Apparently the real issue isn’t getting metalcraft, it’s that I have much better things to do.

Dispense Justice

First I need three artifacts, then they need to attack with multiple men. Meh. This just isn’t good enough. Read the rest of this entry »

Scars of Mirrodin Set Review: Artifacts and Lands by Seth Burn

bdm | 01:42AM on Wed Sep 29 2010

Seth Burn is a long-time Magic columnist — you may remember him as the resident Used Deck Salesman when TCGPlayer.com was known as Brainburst — a fixture of the NY Magic community, and known for his annual NFL previews on various Magic sites throughout the years. He felt the siren’s call of the set review for the soon to be released Scars of Mirrodon and we are happy to present it here at Top8Magic.

Hi there. If you know who I am you are probably only weeks away from receiving your first social security check (if you’re American). I felt like writing a set review so please enjoy! I’ll start with the artifacts as they are the root of the set. I won’t be reviewing all the cards, but rest assured if I don’t mention a card I don’t really care about its existence, at least as far as Constructed is concerned. Anyway, here we go:

Scars of Mirrodin:

Artifacts

Argentum Armor

If I play it entirely fairly it costs 12 mana. White has ways of cheating that, but I doubt they are worth it. +6/+6 and destroying a permanent are nice, but they aren’t that nice. On the plus side it is pretty powerful in limited. * Addendum: I was wrong. White can massively cheat with Quest for the Holy Relic. Read the rest of this entry »

Picking at Scars Part 4

Mike Flores and I sat down to discuss our exclusive preview card, Painsmith, from the soon-to-be-released Scars of Mirrodin. We did manage to talk about this intriguing little two-drop but of course the conversation meandered and we covered a bunch of other cards that have been spoiled thus far. The topic of an old vs. young battle of the Pro Tour All Stars also came up and Koth the Hammer may have been mentioned once or twice in passing as well.
